Smart Storage Solutions Worth Trying

What makes us stand out amongst the sea of house extension companies in London, is our dedication to our clients. We wholly believe professionalism and strong communication are key in our line of work, alongside a fantastic design and finish. That is why at Home Tales, when we tend to home extension projects, we encourage and welcome our lovely clients to discuss all the little details with us.

We enjoy providing solutions for issues homeowners are faced with, such as lack of storage, privacy, or natural daylight. That is why in today’s post, we wanted to highlight some smart storage solutions that anyone can implement, even without extending their property.

Multi-purpose furniture

There is plenty of furniture available on the market that have storage designed into the piece without drastically effecting the overall aesthetic. There are also great options for smaller properties for homeowners that want a more subtle solution. For example, platform beds are popular with teenagers and university students as they allow for a large amount of space to be freed up beneath, and beds that flip up to reveal an undisturbed hollow space perfect for bed sheets and towels.

Shelving can be incorporated into headboards so you can store items you would prefer to hide away, such as books, toiletries, or an alarm clock. Bespoke window seats in a bedroom, living room, or office are always a favourable addition to any home, especially as it offers extra storage space which can be hidden under the seating area or be made a feature by installing large side drawers. If your issue is in finding where to put your pots and pans in your kitchen, a kitchen island may be perfect for you. Lastly, sofas and leg rests have been adapted to accommodate cramped homes, they now offer internal storage space as a standard.

Under stairs

A prime spot that is widely overlooked by homeowners is the space under a staircase. We love that this space is tucked out of sight and can be redesigned to suit a wide range of purposes. When we reconfigure the floor of our clients’ homes, we often convert this area into a utility, pantry, extra WC, shelving, or even pull-out drawers. This means clunky appliances and unsightly clutter can be put aside, leaving room for a clean and sleek interior.

Shelving placement

Of course shelving is the go-to option for adding some extra surface area to place photos, books, and plants, but there are alternate placements we think you should consider implementing. Radiator shelves are effective for utilising the untouched space above your radiators. Place small essentials such as your family photographs, room scents and keys here. Another option is to install shelving along the perimeter of the top of your walls, or above and around your doors. This will make little if any impact on your floor area and create the perfect spot for books, storage boxes, and shoes.

You can install bespoke shelving made to fit awkward spaces such as a chimney breast or pinched corner. Last but not least, you can divide an open plan layout with tall shelving units. Once full of items, it is an effective divider which partially obstructs the view between zones such as a bedroom and a living room, or a living room and a dining room.

In plain sight

Some alternate ways to free up storage space in your house may involve streamlining your whole interior. This means installing pocket doors, which frees up floor area that would otherwise be taken up by a standard door swing. Introducing fold away tables that can be stored away vertically, or have built in storage space, frees up important floor area in a cramped living room or bedroom. The same goes for wall-mounted seating. As furniture would not be touching the floor area, you can place storage boxes underneath here or household appliances that are not in use.

Placing a freestanding clothes rack in a bedroom has become fashionable and works well for someone struggling to find space for their clothing. Hang your clothes for the week on a clothes rack positioned next to a full-length mirror to streamline your morning routine. Mount your TV onto a wall or chimney breast and install hidden storage behind it to house electronics and DVDs. This creates an elegant and flush interior that would be incredibly practical.
