Making Way for Valuable Storage Space

We believe house extension companies in London should provide design solutions and suggestions to make the homeowners’ lives more comfortable. Especially during these times of increasing expenses and housing prices, renovating an existing home has proven more efficient than moving property. For instance, side return extensions in London can create some much-needed room in a typical terrace with unused external area. Undertaking such a project creates the perfect opportunity to introduce more storage space in a family home. If storage is one of your main concerns, today’s post will be of great help!

Loft

A lot of homeowners like to shove their unused items into the ad hoc storage in their lofts, keeping them out of sight and out of mind. Christmas trees and suitcases are well acquainted with this vacant space, but we don’t think this is the most efficient use of the loft.

By converting your loft, you can create more habitable floor area and add lots of storage in the process! For example, by simply installing rooflights into a pitched roof, the unusable area becomes habitable, so you can add a master bedroom with under eaves storage. This is an affordable and popular setup for a loft conversion.

However, you don’t just have to be confined to the structure you started with. As you can imagine, extending the rear roof by adding a dormer creates tons of extra floor area. This means you can add that dedicated walk-in wardrobe or dressing area to keep all your clothes and clutter away in one room. Install the utility within your bathroom to store your dirty washing and carry out less-sanitary tasks. You can store your towels in the utility room for easy access when bathing, so these large pieces will no longer dominate your wardrobe.

Some of our clients commission us to plan out built in storage for their loft or first floor layout. This is much sleeker than installing an individual wardrobe into the space. Your built in wardrobe can be full height, so the issue we see of wasted space above a freestanding wardrobe would no longer be prevalent.

Ground floor

Similar to loft conversions, undertaking a ground floor extension creates the ideal situation to add more storage space. That’s why we suggest clearly relaying to your designer (prior to any works) that you would like to maximise the amount of storage you can get.

When considering the layout of your ground floor, don’t forget to address what to do with the space under the stairs. Many of our clients opt to position their utility or pantry here as oftentimes there is ample room to fit large appliances. Otherwise, use the space for shutting away your vacuum cleaner, mops, and other cleaning appliances.

For a kitchen extension, you can add lots of cabinets and built-in storage with that extra floor area, and even install a kitchen island. A kitchen island is a fantastic feature to create more counterspace and kitchen units dedicated to storage. This is great for the home chef with lots of pots and pans but no place to put them. The kitchen island units can also be used as a display cabinet to add warmth and character to your kitchen.

Having a separate utility means you can hide away your large, clunky washing appliances, along with any dirty clothes, leaving most of your kitchen cabinets free for storing away your items. Add a quirky feature to your room by installing a floor to ceiling bookshelf which can hold your cookbooks, decorations, or goods you’d like to tuck away in canvas storage boxes. It makes the wall a functional space and doesn’t shrink the room, as the full height furniture creates the illusion of height.
