Homeowners who decide to undertake a home extension generally arrive at the decision in one of two ways. It’s a chicken and egg scenario; so the question is, what comes first? Some of our clients have been desperate for more space for years, and they know exactly what they intend to do with it: a new utility room at 1.2m wide, a dining room with a skylight framed above the table and a WC tucked away under the stairs. The others decide to extend first, before having put any thought into what they will do with the space or how it will look at the end. The truth is there is no right or wrong way and both have pros and cons. 

If you are the first, and know exactly what you want, we would recommend keeping an open mind when you come to putting pen to paper. On occasion, ideas might not necessarily work well when it comes to practicality, and we know from experience that there are factors which might mean that you have to adapt. Your architectural designer should really have on-site experience, so they can flag potential issues from the outset. Practical designs are really important. There is no good designing something that is either impossible or very expensive to build, impractical to use, or that doesn’t look good in reality.
