Wandsworth Nursery Refurbishment

Nursery design is a dream project for an interior designer. Where else can you use brightly coloured, imaginative wallpaper, cloud shape rugs, and patterned blinds? We have recently completed this home renovation in a five-bed property in Wandsworth. We, at Home Tales, have done everything – from start to finish, in every corner and crevice. We completed the design phase which included architectural design, obtaining the relevant planning permissions for the ground floor extension and loft conversion, and the structural calculations. The homeowner also wanted to remove all of the internal chimney stacks, so they required additional calculations for that. We helped them find a builder, recommending on our preferred contractors. We project managed the build and took them through to completion on-site. For this room, the nursery, we helped with the interior design.

We will talk you through the ideas, inspiration and process behind this beautiful nursery.

Before: what a transformation!

We love a good before and after photo, don’t you? The difference is quite shocking. The original property didn’t have any central heating system. It had been derelict for quite some time. There were some electrics, but all of the wires were showing externally on the walls. The windows were in disrepair, and the walls were very old and in bad condition.

Structural and material changes

In terms of the structure of this room, we removed the chimney which added a sizable chunk to the room. It also makes the room a much friendlier shape for furniture placement. We removed the in-built cabinets and stripped back all of the walls to reveal the stud-walls. We then plastered the ceiling and walls and hung a new door. We added skirting boards too. The window was replaced with a like for like sash design. The windows are made from accoya wood, which is a fantastic material to use for external doors and windows. It doesn’t expand with moisture. In fact, you can even do a test. Measure a piece of accoya wood and keep it in a glass of water for a week. Then take it out and re-measure. It won’t have expanded at all. We stripped back the floor which revealed these beautiful original reclaimed floorboards. We sanded these down and varnished them, to create a beautiful reclaimed wood finish.

Interior design

We were thrilled to be undertaking the interior design of this room. We love interior design, and having seen hundreds of properties, we have tons of ideas and tricks to get the most out of your room’s usage. After speaking with the client, we discovered they wanted a gender-neutral colour scheme, which was calming and soothing to the eye. They had a yellow chair which they wanted to incorporate in the room, so this started the baseline of our colour scheme. We combined it with blue, which is a lovely soothing colour.

The wallpaper adds a cheerful charm to the room. It’s made from a thick, wipeable material which is perfect for those sticky hands and colourful crayons that will inevitably make their mark there eventually. The custom fitted roman blinds have a blackout lining which is perfect for those daytime naps and light summer months.

The wooden furniture and cloud rug is from Maisons Du Monde. The natural wood and white exterior compliment the wooden floor perfectly. The room isn’t huge, so we wanted a wardrobe with open shelving. This will avoid the largest piece of furniture dominating the room. The toy box is perfect for storing away those toys, keeping the room maintainable and easy to clean. The rug is perfect for lounging on the floor. It’s really thick and lush and feel wonderful beneath those little toes! Seating is a must in a nursery, so the large chair is a fantastic, practical centrepiece to the room. The light is from made.com which is perfect for a softer light when needed.
