It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…

At Home Tales, we can guarantee a personable and bespoke service that you may not receive from other home renovation companies. Our scope covers a range of home improvements, whether you’re looking to reconfigure your ground floor, convert your loft, or install a kitchen extension in London.

You’ve probably felt the temperature drop dramatically in the past few weeks, and with the festive season right around the corner, we thought it was the perfect time to share some tips on how to get your house ready for Christmas. To start off the winter posts, we wanted to walk you through preparing a guest bedroom, decluttering, and decking your halls.

Guest bedroom

If you’re hosting any Christmas celebrations or expecting guests throughout the season, setting up a spare bedroom would be a lovely addition to your home. A guest bedroom allows your visitors to have their own space so they can be the most comfortable. This helps to avoid any stress concerning sleeping arrangements, especially if you’re both looking for an affordable solution. On the other hand, if you don’t have the extra space for a whole guest bedroom, a sofa bed or inflatable furniture are great alternatives. You could convert a large storage space, nursery, or dressing room into a temporary bedroom too. All this to ensure that you can experience all the Christmas festivities with your family and friends at the ready.

Declutter

Christmas is a great excuse to declutter your home, as you’ve probably accumulated plenty of unused items throughout the year. Some of us are good at donating/disposing of these purchases, but the majority of us seem to find a corner of the house to hide them away. Since Christmas is filled with lights, decorations, and gift giving, it is a fantastic time to go through your piles of unwanted goods and pass your items on to someone who will make use of them i.e., that waffle maker you were gifted last Christmas that you never seem to touch. Once your house is stripped down, you can build it up with bright and colourful decorations to make any passer-by feel jolly!

Decorate main space

We probably don’t need to tell you but decorating your house can really get you in the festive spirit. Some people are super keen on putting their tree up as soon as November 1st hits, while others choose to wait until a free weekend in December. Either way, the tree is the main event and should be treated as such! Dress it up with fairy lights, baubles, tinsel, and a star. You can even make your own dried clementine slices to hang from the branches by leaving some fresh thin cuts in the oven to dehydrate. Put up your stockings and wall hangings, light the fireplace and leave out a warm decorative throw. Include a fluffy rug to keep your toes nice and toasty.

Zones

If your property has an open plan layout, you can make the most out of the space (through the festive period) with some zoning. This is particularly handy for dividing up an open room while still maintaining a fluid feel. Introduce a play area to your open living/dining space by finding a spot to lay a colourful rug, some floor cushions, and a bunch of toys. Make sure there are no tables or other sharp objects near this play zone to avoid any mishaps. Another easy way to zone and refurbish a room is to apply a fresh lick of paint. You can create a statement wall or go ahead and repaint a whole room to compliment your Christmas theme. Smells can trigger nostalgia, so place some winter candles and room mists throughout your property. This may include scents such as pine, cinnamon, and apple, or you can even get candles that crackle like a fireplace and smell like wood smoke.

Kitchen

Lastly, zhuzh up your kitchen to accommodate the amount of hosting and entertaining you’ll be doing in December. You could do this by installing a wine fridge under your kitchen counter. It is the ideal companion for hosting a party, as you can stock up on some delicious wine, prosecco, and champagne. Wine fridges typically have a glazed door, adding to your kitchen aesthetic. On the note of stocking up, why not tend to your pantry too? Restock all the Christmas meal essentials, such as gravy, seasoning, baking ingredients, etc. With all of this in mind, you’ll be ready to tackle the month of December head on!
