Making a Home Renovation Mood Board

If you’re thinking of extending or refurbishing your home, a mood board is a great way to collate ideas to share with your design team. At Home Tales, we take ‘a no idea too big, no details too small’ approach to your home. We aim to design a property that works for you and by understanding your desired finish, as well as being aware of any must have fixtures and fittings, we can suggest creative ways to utilise your space. But what is the best way to present your ideas to a designer? And how much detail, can be too much detail?

Social media can be a fantastic place to find general home inspiration. Collecting images from Instagram or creating a Pinterest board of homes you like can help us understand your preferences. From ‘rustic’ to ‘industrial’, inspiration for your home can be found in a hashtag search and it can also be a great place to follow other renovator’s journeys.  It’s always helpful to show these to your designer, but do not be shy in telling us the specifics of what you like and dislike for your own project. Over at our gallery you’ll find examples of our own past projects, we’ll always do our best to answer any questions you may have on the build and finish, as well as the design process.

Mood boards can go far deeper than just pictures of finished homes, they can be a great way for you to combine textures and colours to see what materials work together. We see more and more people explore elements such as exposed brick or pops of colour, and with a mood board you can collate these ideas visually to see what works for you. Of course, this can be taken a step further with a 3D visual of your proposed renovation. Available as an additional service, our team can use your ideas to create a visual that showcases how your property will look – we can include details down to flooring, appliances, even your desired light switches! You can learn more about the benefits of 3D visuals here.

When it comes to an inspiration board you don’t need to worry about being creative or tech savvy. The aim is to help you narrow down and refine your ideas, and to communicate those with the designer. Some clients may choose to do this with paint swatches, fabric cuttings and materials samples. Others look to build theirs digitally on apps like Canva (where you can find free templates) or by putting images together on a simple documents. Regardless of how grand your mood board may or may not be, it’s always a big help to our team who strive to understand and successfully execute your vision for your property.
